Man Stabs Two Tourists near Acropolis

A man attacked two tourists with a knife near the Acropolis in Athens on Tuesday morning. According to Greek police, both victims were injured and taken to hospital.

The assailant attacked the couple, Americans of Greek descent, at the entrance to the Acropolis Museum. The woman suffered a minor leg injury, while the man sustained a more serious injury to his hand.

Police detained the suspect. They did not immediately release his identity, but investigators said he appeared to have mental health issues.

Violent street attacks are rare in Greece. In April, police arrested an 89-year-old man who, according to investigators, opened fire with a shotgun inside a social security office and at a courthouse in central Athens. At least four people were injured in the incident.

The Acropolis, home to the nearly 2,500-year-old Parthenon, is one of Greece's most popular tourist attractions. Last year, it attracted approximately 4.6 million visitors.
