Lindsey Graham’s Sister Enters South Carolina Senate Race

Republican Darline Graham will run for a full six-year term in the US Senate to succeed her late brother, Lindsey Graham. She announced her candidacy after President Donald Trump urged her to enter the race.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham to the Senate last week following the death of Lindsey Graham, who died on 11 July. Graham said she wants to continue her brother’s legacy.

In the Republican primary on 11 August, she will face Congressmen Russell Fry and Ralph Norman. Congresswoman Nancy Mace has announced that she will not run. Senate Majority Leader John Thune described Graham as a strong candidate but stopped short of endorsing her.

The winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the November election. However, in reliably Republican South Carolina, the Republican nominee is widely considered the favorite.

Graham, 62, previously led the South Carolina Commission for the Blind and worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. Together with Senator Richard Blumenthal, she recently introduced a revised bill imposing new sanctions on Russia, legislation that her brother had championed. She has also said she wants to focus on domestic issues, including food prices, fuel costs, health care and insurance.
