Trump to Unveil New Tariffs as Current Measures Expire

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in an interview with CNBC that President Donald Trump will announce another round of import tariffs in the coming days. The expected measures come as the blanket 10% tariffs imposed in February are due to expire on Friday.

With Congress not expected to extend the tariffs, the administration is preparing to reinforce its new tariff regime through other legal mechanisms.

In early June, the Office of the US Trade Representative proposed imposing tariffs of up to 12.5% on imports from 60 countries. It said the measures were intended to combat the alleged use of forced labor abroad.

Greer said the proposal would affect about 99% of US foreign trade, underscoring the scale of the problem. He also argued that, unlike the US, most other countries either lack or fail to enforce strict laws banning trade in goods produced through forced labor.
