Hitler's Birthplace Becomes Police Station

The building in the Austrian town of Braunau am Inn where Adolf Hitler was born officially opened as a police station on Wednesday. The move follows the government's compulsory purchase of the property in 2017 and is intended to prevent the site from becoming a pilgrimage destination for neo-Nazis and to strip it of any symbolic significance.

Today, the white facade bears only a simple "Police" sign. In front of the building stands a memorial stone from the former Mauthausen concentration camp inscribed with the words: "Never Again Fascism".

The redevelopment has nevertheless divided opinion.

Mayor Johannes Waidbacher and many local residents have welcomed the building's new administrative role. The Mauthausen Committee and several Holocaust survivors' organizations, however, argue that repurposing the site risks encouraging people to forget its history rather than confront it.

They say greater emphasis should instead be placed on educating the public about Nazi crimes and commemorating their victims.

Local authorities and experts, however, say incidents linked to right-wing extremism in Braunau am Inn are now rare.
