Hungarian Attorney General Nagy Resigns

Hungarian Attorney General Gabor Balint Nagy has announced his resignation, effective 25 August 2026. In a statement, he emphasized that the prosecutor's office must remain an independent institution and must not become a tool of political struggles, according to the website telex.hu.

He claims that the pressure to remove him was linked to politicians' expectations regarding ongoing criminal proceedings, which he says undermines confidence in the rule of law.

Nagy stated that he is stepping down to protect the authority of the prosecutor's office and its functioning. The resignation comes after repeated criticism from Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who, upon taking office, announced the replacement of several high-ranking constitutional officials associated with the Viktor Orban era.

Magyar described Nagy as an obstacle to systemic change and, following the announcement of his departure, stated that the country had rid itself of yet another "Orban puppet".

The circumstances surrounding the resignation also coincide with internal disputes within the prosecutor's office related to the investigation of several sensitive cases.
