Spain’s Parliament Rejects 2027 Spending Framework

Spain’s lower house rejected the government’s proposed spending framework for 2027 on Thursday, dealing another blow to efforts to approve a national budget before the end of the legislative term next year.

The proposal was defeated by 176 votes to 166, with five lawmakers abstaining.

Spain has not approved a new budget since 2023 because the minority coalition lacks sufficient support in the fragmented parliament. Instead, it has rolled over the 2023 budget for three consecutive years.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has repeatedly vowed to serve out his term despite growing pressure from the opposition to call an early election. If he does so, Spain’s next general election must be held no later than August 2027.
