Irish Police Detain Two over Possible Bomb Attack

Irish police detained two people on suspicion of crimes against the state after stopping a vehicle near the town of Carrickmacross, close to the border with Northern Ireland. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from the army was also called in to assist.

Police said they stopped the vehicle on Wednesday but declined to disclose the results of the search for operational reasons. Irish public broadcaster RTÉ, citing sources, reported that the search confirmed the presence of a bomb. According to RTÉ, investigators believe the vehicle was heading across the border to carry out an attack in Northern Ireland.

Those detained were a woman in her 20s, who was driving the vehicle and remains in custody, and a man in his 40s.

Carrickmacross is located about 10 km from the border between Ireland and the British province of Northern Ireland. Despite the 1998 peace agreement, isolated attacks by militant groups, including attempted car bombings, continue to occur there.
