Kallas: EU Expands Iran Sanctions over Domestic Repression

The European Union has adopted new restrictive measures against Iranian officials over alleged human rights violations. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the move, saying the sanctions target several Iranian judges responsible for persecuting political opponents and religious minorities.

A leading figure in a cyber group that the EU accuses of supporting the regime's repressive information-control measures has also been added to the sanctions list.

Kallas said that despite international attention focused on the conflict in the Middle East, the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran itself cannot be overlooked.

She said Tehran is escalating internal repression and that the European Union will continue imposing sanctions on those responsible. The names of the sanctioned individuals have not yet been made public.
