France Evacuates as Spain Wildfires Claim First Victim

Extensive wildfires in southwestern France and Spain have led to further mass evacuations and claimed their first victim. In France, the flames have spread inland toward Bordeaux, forcing approximately 197,000 people to flee the Gironde and Landes departments.

The French military has deployed an A400M military transport aircraft to assist firefighters. In Spain, two of the three major fires near Madrid have merged, and the country has declared its first-ever nationwide state of emergency due to wildfires.

An elderly man died in his car during a smaller fire near Valencia, marking the first confirmed fatality of the current wave of fires. Spain is also expecting reinforcements in the form of firefighting aircraft from Italy and Greece under the European Union's mechanism.

The situation in both countries is being exacerbated by strong winds and a prolonged drought combined with repeated heat waves.
