Germany's AfD Under Review over Candidate's Eligibility

The candidacy of AfD politician Reinhild Goes in the local elections in Lower Saxony has become the subject of a constitutional review. Although there have been reports that the election commission barred her from running for mayor, the municipality maintains that a final decision has not yet been made.

The commission has tasked the district supervisory authority with reviewing the constitutionality of her candidacy under new legislation that allows for the vetting of candidates for certain municipal offices. The outcome is expected by 29 July.

According to sources, other AfD representatives in the region are also facing similar vetting. These sources point out that the municipal election commission had previously found insufficient grounds for such a review and point to the recommendation that, in cases of doubt, decisions should tend toward accepting the candidacy.
