CENTCOM, UAE Form First Joint AI Military Unit

US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to establish their first bilateral working group dedicated to accelerating the development of military applications for artificial intelligence.

The initiative, named Task Force Talon Synapse, is expected to begin operations in the coming weeks. Based in Abu Dhabi, the unit will comprise around 20 American and Emirati specialists in artificial intelligence, data science and cybersecurity.

“This will be a historic milestone as we work with one of our most capable regional partners to rapidly deliver evolving AI advancements to our warfighter”, CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said. He added that both countries share a strong commitment to harnessing artificial intelligence to drive innovation across military operations.

Cooper first discussed the creation of the joint task force with UAE National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnun bin Zayed Al Nahyan last year. During a visit to the region last month, CENTCOM officials also met with leaders from the artificial intelligence sector and senior Emirati defense officials.

The task force will focus on integrating artificial intelligence into intelligence analysis, critical infrastructure protection and regional security monitoring, with the aim of improving decision-making and operational effectiveness.
