EU Introduces Right to Repair after Warranty Expires

A directive took effect on 1 August in European Union countries that is intended to make it easier to repair defective products rather than replace them. Consumers can request repairs for smartphones, washing machines, refrigerators and other appliances even after the statutory warranty period has expired.

Manufacturers will be required to provide repairs at a reasonable price and within a reasonable time. They will also be required to publish clear information on their websites about repair services and estimated prices.

The European Commission expects that the new rules will help reduce waste, extend the lifespan of products, limit greenhouse gas emissions and save consumers money.

According to European Commission Vice-President Henna Virkkunen, Europe should not become a continent that throws away technology. "The future is smart, repairable, and circular", she said.

At the same time, manufacturers will not be able to refuse repairs or discourage consumers from seeking them. The new rules also require them to ensure the availability of replacement parts at affordable prices.
