Three Lions Die of Suspected Heatstroke at Tokyo Zoo

Three female lions have died of suspected heatstroke at Tokyo’s Tama Zoological Park, in what could be the first heat-related deaths among its lion population in the zoo’s 62-year history.

The lions, aged three, 11 and 15, showed signs of severe dehydration and multiple organ failure in post-mortem examinations. The exact cause of death is still under investigation.

After temperatures rose sharply in mid-July, most of the zoo’s 16 lions lost their appetite and became so lethargic that they required treatment. While some recovered, others deteriorated to the point that they could no longer stand or lost consciousness.

The zoo suspended public viewing of the lions on 23 July. Keepers continue to cool them with water and administer medication and fluids through intravenous drips.

Temperatures in the Tokyo area reached nearly 39C in mid- to late July, prompting heatstroke warnings. Although lions are native to sub-Saharan Africa, they are accustomed to dry heat rather than Tokyo’s combination of high temperatures and humidity. This makes it harder for them to regulate their body temperature.
