Trump Plans Polysilicon Tariffs

President Donald Trump's administration is preparing to impose both a minimum import price and tariffs on polysilicon and related products, four sources familiar with the plans told Reuters. The measures are part of US efforts to compete with China in artificial intelligence and energy.

The decision, expected later this month, is primarily intended to protect US polysilicon producers Hemlock Semiconductor and Wacker Chemie from China's growing influence over the chip supply chain.

Under the proposal, however, importers that invest in silicon wafer and solar cell production in the United States could be allowed to offset part of the costs created by the trade measures.

The Chinese embassy in Washington criticized the proposed measures and called on the United States to remove the tariffs and resolve trade disputes through dialogue.
