Ceuta Seeks Transfer of Migrant Minors to Mainland Spain

The Spanish enclave of Ceuta is calling for the transfer of hundreds of unaccompanied migrant minors to the mainland after approximately 72,000 migrants arrived on its coast in a single week.

Although most of the migrants have since returned to Morocco, approximately 1,100 unaccompanied minors remain in Ceuta and cannot be immediately deported. Many are housed in makeshift shelters or sleeping on the streets, as reception centers are overcrowded.

Approximately 75 people died during the migration wave, reigniting debate on migration in the European Union.

Local government official Juan Jesús Vivas described the situation as unsustainable and requested assistance. Meanwhile, the Spanish government has approved €25m ($29m) in aid for Ceuta to care for migrant minors.

The issue of their relocation is causing tension between the People's Party and the Vox party, which jointly govern four regions. While a 2025 law mandates the relocation of minors from overcrowded areas within 15 days of the conclusion of administrative proceedings, experts warn that the entire process could take several months.
