EU Calls for More Investment in Wildfire Prevention

The European Union wants to persuade member states to invest more in nature conservation and wildfire prevention. European Commissioner for the Environment Jessika Roswall made the statement after massive wildfires in France, Spain and Greece caused an estimated €15.6bn–19.1bn ($18bn–$22.1bn) in damage.

Scientists warn that climate change increases the likelihood of extreme heat waves and wildfires, but the condition of the landscape also plays a significant role. The European Commission therefore emphasizes the need to remove dry vegetation from forests, restore wetlands and implement other measures that can slow the spread of fire.

Roswall stated that Brussels would monitor whether member states are also using European funds for fire prevention and nature restoration. The Commission will also assess national plans for the restoration of damaged ecosystems, which countries are required to submit by September.

According to the commissioner, investments in prevention are essential to protect residents, the economy and industry.
