Calls Spread Online for Another Mass Entry into Ceuta

Calls for a mass attempt to cross the border into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on 15 August are spreading rapidly among young Moroccans on social media, according to El País.

In Facebook and WhatsApp groups with tens to hundreds of thousands of members, users are discussing the planned date, crossing options and the risks of illegal migration.

While some express determination to go, many warn that this could be dangerous misinformation or a trap set by human-trafficking groups. Researchers note that social media is the main source of information about migration to Europe for many young Moroccans, and that it often highlights only the positive aspects.

Discussions also include advice on crossing the border or using inflatable boats, as well as warnings about the deadly risks at sea.

Speculation about another attempt at a mass entry into Ceuta follows a recent wave of migration that has significantly increased tensions at the border.
