U.S. Senate Approves Russia Sanctions Bill

The US Senate has approved by a large majority sweeping sanctions legislation aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine and expanding sanctions on Iran. The Senate voted 86 to 11 to pass the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which was backed by the late Republican senator.

The bill imposes sanctions on Russian officials and allows US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that are major consumers of Russian energy.

The measures could affect China, India, Japan and some European Union member states. Supporters argue that the tariffs would reduce Moscow’s energy revenues, which help finance the war.

Critics warn that the new tariff powers could raise costs for US importers and consumers. The bill now heads to the House of Representatives. If the House approves it, Trump’s signature will be required for it to take effect.
