Spain Imposes Border Checks on Arrivals From Italy
The Spanish government announced on Friday that it will introduce border controls on flights and ships arriving from Italy from midnight on Saturday until 7 September amid a dispute with Rome over illegal migration.
Citing “persistent irregular migratory pressure” from Italy, authorities will carry out passport, nationality and visa checks on Italian passengers and travelers from other countries arriving from Italy.
Spain said the measures would remain in place as long as Italy maintains its own restrictions, which Madrid said were introduced in response to the arrival of 72,000 people in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on 30 July.
