Drone Explodes near Bulgaria-Romania Gas Pipeline

On Saturday, a drone entered Bulgarian airspace and exploded near an international gas pipeline shortly after crossing the border with Romania. According to the AP, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev specified that the explosion occurred just after 5 a.m., approximately 100 meters from the border on Bulgarian territory.

The drone was neither detected nor identified while flying through Romanian or Bulgarian airspace.

An investigation revealed that the unmanned aircraft exploded near the former Kardam border checkpoint, about one kilometer from the compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline. The incident resulted in no casualties or damage to buildings. It is not yet clear where the drone came from.

Radev announced that the area has been cordoned off and that authorities will step up surveillance. Following this incident, border police resources will be redeployed from the border with Turkey to the border with Romania to focus on drone detection and countermeasures.

Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov added that, given the force of the explosion and the column of black smoke, the drone likely carried a significant amount of explosives. He also explained that such drones are difficult to detect due to their small size and low altitude.

The North Atlantic Council will address the incident early next week. Both Bulgaria and Romania are members of NATO and the European Union, which heightens the significance of the entire event.
