Thailand School Shooting Death Toll Rises to Nine

The death toll from Friday's shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in a Bangkok suburb has risen to nine. Another 23 people were injured. This is the worst mass shooting in Thailand since 2022.

A 14-year-old student at the school is suspected of carrying out the attack. According to police, the tragedy began at dawn when he allegedly shot and killed his grandparents at home. He then traveled by bus about 18 km to the school, where he began shooting shortly before 10:00 a.m.

During the approximately 40-minute attack, he killed three teachers and two school employees. He eventually turned the gun on himself.

During the shooting, students barricaded themselves in their classrooms, turned off the lights and blocked the doors with desks. The school has more than 3,000 students and nearly 150 teachers.

The attack has reignited the debate over gun control in Thailand, which has the highest number of firearms in civilian possession among Southeast Asian countries.
