Trump-Tied Firm Plans Unauthorized Greenland Drilling

The American company Greenland Energy is preparing to begin drilling operations in eastern Greenland, even though it has not yet obtained the necessary permits from local authorities.

The Greenlandic government has issued a “strong warning” to the company, noting that all logistical operations must be approved in advance by the mineral resources authority.

The Texas-based company, which according to the British daily The Guardian has ties to US President Donald Trump's inner circle, estimates that oil reserves worth up to $1tn may lie beneath the Jameson Land area. It plans to invest $60m in exploratory drilling.

Greenland stopped issuing new oil exploration licenses in 2021 for environmental reasons. Greenland Energy wants to acquire a majority stake in a project by the British company 80 Mile, which obtained exploration rights before the ban. However, it needs approval from Greenlandic authorities to begin drilling.

The developments come as Trump once again talks about gaining control over Greenland.
