Romania May Shut Last Operating Nuclear Reactor

Romania’s state-owned nuclear power producer, Nuclearelectrica, could shut down its last operating reactor on 13 August. The reason is the continuing decline in the Danube’s water level. The company made this clear on Tuesday, despite efforts to divert cooling water to the power plant.

Record-low river levels forced Nuclearelectrica to shut down one reactor in late July. The company operates two reactors at Cernavoda on the Danube, which account for one-fifth of the country’s total electricity production.
