Europe Scrambles for Patriot Missiles for Ukraine

European countries are urgently exploring ways to supply Ukraine with additional Patriot interceptors ahead of expected Russian attacks this winter, according to Politico. Kyiv is facing a severe shortage of PAC-2 and PAC-3 missiles, among its few effective defenses against Russian ballistic weapons.

Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said Russia fires more missiles in a single week than Ukraine receives from its partners over months. In July, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 29 of 195 Russian ballistic missiles.

Supplies in Europe, however, are running low. Germany, which has already delivered Patriot systems and missiles, has warned that it is approaching the limits of what it can provide without compromising its own security and NATO commitments. Pressure is also mounting on countries including Poland, Spain and Greece. According to media reports, Poland released only five PAC-3 missiles in July. Ukraine’s homegrown Freyja interceptor still requires further investment, engineering and testing, while German-made PAC-2 missiles are unlikely to arrive before next year.

The situation in the US is further complicating matters. President Donald Trump has said the United States needs to replenish its own stockpiles, which have been significantly depleted by the conflict with Iran.

The White House has also stepped back from earlier suggestions that Ukraine could manufacture Patriot interceptors under license, with Trump saying no agreement has yet been reached. Faced with interceptor shortages, Kyiv is considering a more aggressive strategy of striking Russian launchers and their crews shortly after missiles are fired.
