UnitedHealthcare CEO Killer Pleads Guilty

Luigi Mangione admitted to fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and pleaded guilty in federal court in Manhattan on Friday to two counts of stalking with intent to kill. The plea will avert a federal trial in a case that has drawn worldwide attention.

The 28-year-old defendant testified that he suffered a broken back and navigated the health insurance system before researching details of UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference. He said he then used a 3D printer to make part of a gun and traveled to New York intending to kill Thompson.

Sentencing is scheduled for 18 December, with prosecutors seeking a life sentence. The possibility of the death penalty had already been ruled out after federal murder and weapons charges were dismissed on legal technicalities.

Thompson’s family said the plea marked an “important step toward justice”.

Mangione’s plea could also provide grounds for seeking dismissal of the parallel state murder case, which is scheduled to go to trial on 8 September. His defense team filed a motion to dismiss the murder charge under New York’s double jeopardy law, which protects defendants from being prosecuted twice for the same conduct.
