Xi Jinping Warns of Extreme Weather Risks

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a significant strengthening of the country's preparedness for natural disasters following a series of devastating floods, landslides and typhoons. Extreme weather this summer claimed dozens of lives and caused widespread damage.

Xi noted that as global warming continues, torrential rains, floods, typhoons and droughts are becoming more frequent, and their destructive power is increasing. China should therefore focus more on prevention, improved monitoring and early warning systems.

The president is also calling for the elimination of shortcomings in flood protection and drainage infrastructure in the north of the country. Just last month, 25 people died in landslides in Gansu province, and another disaster in Chongqing claimed 51 lives.

Beijing wants to make more extensive use of artificial intelligence, drones and satellite technology in rescue operations.

Xi also warned that natural disasters must not threaten China's economic, energy, food or social security.
