Five Injured in Shooting at Virginia University

Five people were injured in a shooting at Virginia State University in the US state of Virginia on Saturday. One of the injured is in critical condition. According to the university, there were several suspected perpetrators at the scene, the AP and the BBC report.

Police responded to a dormitory at approximately 1:28 a.m. local time (5:28 a.m. GMT) on Saturday. All five injured individuals were transported to hospitals. The condition of four of them is not life-threatening, the university said.

It is not yet clear whether police have detained any of the suspects. The university temporarily locked down the entire campus following the incident but later lifted the lockdown. A large number of police officers remain at the scene.

Virginia State University has more than 5,000 students and is located about 32 km south of Richmond, the capital of Virginia. The shooting took place shortly before the start of the new academic year. Dormitories opened for students last week, and classes are scheduled to begin on Monday.
