Trump Fails Again to Overturn $5m Carroll Verdict
The US Supreme Court has rejected President Donald Trump’s request for a second time to review the $5m verdict in favor of journalist E. Jean Carroll. Without providing an explanation, the court upheld its June decision and denied Trump’s request to reconsider his appeal against the 2023 judgment.
At that time, a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation based on an incident that occurred in the 1990s at a Manhattan department store. Carroll has since collected nearly $5.63m from Trump, including interest.
The White House chief has denied all allegations from the outset, calling them a hoax. His lawyers attempted to overturn the verdict.
They are using presidential immunity as a defense in an appeal against a separate 2024 ruling, in which a jury awarded Carroll $83.3m in damages for statements Trump made in 2019 while serving as president. The Supreme Court is still considering this separate appeal.
