Switzerland Extends Ukrainian Protection Status to 2028

The Swiss government has decided to extend temporary protection status (S) for refugees from Ukraine until 4 March 2028. The decision reflects continued uncertainty over a lasting ceasefire and an effort to avoid overburdening the domestic asylum system, according to European Pravda.

With this move, Switzerland is aligning its policy with that of the European Union, which approved the same extension in late July.

Along with the extension, however, the country is introducing new restrictions for applicants. From 20 August 2026, the new rules apply primarily to men subject to military service: status S will be granted only to conscription-eligible applicants whose military registration documents are in order.

The stricter rules will not affect Ukrainian citizens who were granted temporary protection status in Switzerland before that date.

Should the security situation in Ukraine stabilize permanently, the Federal Council is prepared to reassess the validity of S status.
