Denmark Sends Troops to Greenland amid Arctic Tensions

Denmark has sent a group of conscripts to Greenland for the first time, aiming to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic, according to Euractiv. With the move, Copenhagen is responding to heightened transatlantic tensions following US President Donald Trump's earlier claims to the semi-autonomous territory, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

The first unit, made up of about 100 conscripts from the Schleswig Foot Regiment, will undergo a month of training in Nuuk and at the air base in Kangerlussuaq.

The deployment is part of a new 11-month military service system that Denmark introduced in February this year in response to the security situation in Europe. After five months of basic training, conscripts perform operational tasks that do not require specialized training.

About 300 professional soldiers are currently permanently stationed in Greenland. Increased emphasis on training in Arctic terrain is intended to better prepare the Danish armed forces to protect critical infrastructure and safeguard sovereignty in this strategically important northern region.
