New Jersey Could Jail Clinic Protesters for Prayers

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has signed a law tightening regulations on activities near facilities that provide abortions and so-called "gender-affirming" care. Pro-life organizations warn that the law could significantly infringe on freedom of speech, according to EWTN News.

The law criminalizes certain forms of "interference" with the provision of services, including inflicting "emotional harm". It also restricts filming and the publication of footage taken within approximately 30 m of abortion clinics.

Police will be able to order the dispersal of a gathering that substantially impedes entry into or exit from the facility. Violations of the law can result in up to 18 months in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

Marie Tasy, executive director of New Jersey Right to Life, called the provisions subjective and described the law as a serious threat to freedom of speech.

According to her, even peaceful counseling of women, prayer, holding signs or offering alternatives to abortion could be labeled as intimidation if someone claims to have felt threatened. According to Tasy, pro-life activists could thus face criminal prosecution for activities protected by the US Constitution.
