German Foreign Minister Arrives in Kyiv, Unannounced

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Kyiv on Saturday for an unannounced visit. He is scheduled to discuss further aid to Ukraine and deepening cooperation between the two countries on defense and security.

The visit comes shortly before Ukraine's Independence Day, which the country celebrates on 24 August. The main topic of Wadephul's talks is expected to be preparations for the coming winter.

Germany intends to help Ukraine by supplying generators, spare parts and other energy equipment. The talks are also expected to cover support for the Ukrainian energy sector and measures to protect critical infrastructure.

Wadephul will also discuss deepening defense and security cooperation. According to the German Foreign Ministry, this will primarily involve strengthening military capabilities, exchanging expertise and jointly building long-term security structures.

The minister traveled to Kyiv by train. Germany did not announce his trip in advance, for security reasons.

This is Wadephul's fourth visit to Ukraine as German foreign minister.
