Tokayev’s New Party Wins 71% in Kazakh Election

Adilet, Kazakhstan’s newly formed pro-government party, won just over 71% of the vote in Sunday’s parliamentary election, the electoral commission said on Monday.

The result is likely to consolidate the power of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Adilet was founded earlier this year and is led by top advisers to Tokayev. Shortly after its formation, it incorporated the former ruling party, Amanat.

In addition to Adilet, four other parties won seats in parliament: the pro-business Respublika and Ak Zhol parties, the center-left Nationwide Social Democratic Party and Auyl, which represents rural voters.

All four opposition parties are broadly supportive of Tokayev’s government.
