UK to Share Storm Shadow Technology With Ukraine

The UK has approved the transfer to Ukraine of technology for the production of Storm Shadow cruise missiles, according to the Oboronka website. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the move during a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Kyiv.

The decision came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the UK to share its Storm Shadow technology so that Ukraine could develop the capability domestically. Burnham said British and French industry would work with Ukraine to develop these capabilities.

The UK will also allow European defense company MBDA, which manufactures Storm Shadow – known as SCALP in France – to disclose classified information about British components of the missile as Ukraine and France seek to establish assembly lines in Ukraine. The decision also complements the UK’s Brakestop project, which focuses on rapidly developing low-cost, long-range strike weapons for Ukraine.

Storm Shadow is a long-range, high-precision air-to-ground cruise missile designed to strike stationary, heavily protected targets in all weather conditions. Its guidance system uses GPS and terrain referencing to navigate, while its low-altitude flight profile helps it evade detection.n.

During the final phase of flight, an infrared seeker compares an image of the target with a stored reference, providing a high degree of accuracy.
