Trump Floats Renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America"

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was seriously considering renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” as the trade war between the United States and Canada escalates.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the proposed change reflected his expectation that the United States would do little business with the Canadian province of Ontario in the future.

One of North America’s five Great Lakes, Lake Ontario borders both Ontario and the US state of New York.

Canada’s minister responsible for US trade, Dominic LeBlanc, said the federal government would not respond to social media posts by the US administration.

Trump’s threat to rename Lake Ontario comes after he changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America last year.
