Log Cabin Republicans Drop Support for Transgender Issues

The Log Cabin Republicans, a conservative US organization that advocates for gay rights, has announced it will no longer promote or support transgender issues. Its leadership voted to focus exclusively on issues related to sexual orientation and advancing conservative political positions.

Board Chair Ross Hemminger said the Log Cabin Republicans now considers itself an organization representing lesbians, gays and bisexuals (LGB). The group began advocating for transgender issues in 2015, but Hemminger said the transgender movement now promotes "radical gender ideology".

The decision comes as President Donald Trump’s administration takes steps to restrict transgender rights. Trump has ordered the federal government to recognize only two sexes, male and female. His administration has also launched investigations into educational institutions and threatened to withhold federal funding over their policies concerning transgender people.

Some human rights groups have criticized the measures, arguing that actions by Trump and Republican governors are creating a dangerous environment for transgender people.
