Weight-Loss Drugs Reshape US Restaurant Menus

American restaurant chains are responding to the sharp rise in the use of GLP-1 drugs, which suppress appetite and are widely used for weight loss, ABC News reports. A July Gallup poll found that the share of American adults taking the medications rose from 3% in 2024 to 11%–12% in 2026.

Chains including Smoothie King, Chipotle and Shake Shack have introduced menu options specifically aimed at customers taking the drugs.

Nutrition experts recommend smaller or flexible portions that are high in protein and fiber but low in calories. Protein helps preserve muscle mass during weight loss, while fiber can help combat constipation caused by the drugs.

New offerings include high-protein smoothies with no added sugar, salad bowls with lean meat and bunless burgers. Fast-food chain Burger King is also planning to test new menu items including Whopper bites and protein-forward bowls.
