Uganda Ebola Outbreak Ends as Congo Cases Rise

Uganda has successfully contained an outbreak of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, which infected 20 people and killed two. In the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo, however, cases continue to rise and containment efforts are struggling to keep pace.

According to the Congolese government, more than 5,600 cases and 2,700 deaths had been recorded as of Tuesday. The outbreak is the second-deadliest in history.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said the acceleration of the outbreak had slowed but transmission remained very active. Analyses of the Bundibugyo virus have also shown no signs of mutation despite its rapid spread.

WHO officials have warned of an immediate $30m funding shortfall for logistical operations to deliver medical and protective equipment to the worst-hit areas. Without the additional funding, they warn that progress in containing the outbreak could stall.
