Burnham Pushes for Closer Ties With EU

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron met in London on Thursday to discuss Britain’s efforts to deepen ties with the European Union, according to Downing Street.

A key topic was the EU’s Made in Europe initiative, which could prioritize European-made goods in public contracts. Burnham warned that the policy could pose significant challenges for British industry.

The two leaders agreed that Britain and France should work together to find a way forward that protects their shared interests. Burnham had already called in August for Britain to take a bolder approach to strengthening ties with the EU.

The meeting came a day after Burnham and Macron joined King Charles III on a visit to the exhibition housing the historic Bayeux Tapestry. The artifact has been loaned to the British Museum from its home in northern France under an agreement with the French government.
