US President Donald Trump has reiterated that he is continuing to work on a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, even though direct talks between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky have not yet taken place.

“I'm watching it, I'm talking to President Putin and President Zelensky about it,” Trump said in a telephone interview with CBS News. “Something will happen — they're not ready yet, but it will happen. We'll get it done.”

After his summit with Putin in Alaska in August, which did not produce a solution, Trump announced further talks on the war in Ukraine. According to the White House, a phone call with Zelensky was planned for Thursday.
Putin expressed his willingness to receive Zelensky in Moscow – provided that the meeting was well prepared and produced concrete results. However, the Ukrainian government rejects Moscow as a venue for talks.

Trump emphasized that he was “unhappy” about the ongoing bloodshed but would continue to push for peace. He said he had originally thought the war in Ukraine would be “one of the easier conflicts” to resolve, but it was proving to be more complicated.

Despite the lack of progress, Trump remains convinced: “I think we can do it.”
