Macron will appoint a new French prime minister in the coming days
French President Emmanuel Macron will appoint a new prime minister “in the coming days,” the presidential palace confirmed on Monday after the French parliament passed a no-confidence vote against the government on Monday over its plans to curb rising public debt.
Of a total of 558 deputies, 364 voted in favor of the no-confidence motion against the government and only 194 against, marking the fall of the fourth French prime minister in the last two years.
The president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, then declared that Bayrou must submit his resignation in accordance with the constitution, which he intends to hand over to President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday morning.
Even before the vote, Bayrou warned that the government's resignation would not change the reality of the country's rising spending and debt.
Meanwhile, the leader of the far left, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, announced on Network X that he would table a motion in parliament to impeach the president. “Bayrou has fallen. Victory and relief for the people. Macron is now at the forefront in front of the people. He too must go,” he said, adding that the faction would table the motion on Tuesday morning.
