Nepal's Prime Minister Oli resigns after protests against social media ban
Massive anti-government demonstrations following the ban on social networks have led to the resignation of Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli in Nepal.
The protests, led by young people, were directed against corruption and the lack of future prospects.
Nineteen people were killed and more than 100 were injured in the violent riots.
Even after a curfew was imposed, the unrest continued to escalate.
In Kathmandu, car tires were burned, the airport was closed, and politicians faced the wrath of the crowd.
Oli, 73, was appointed prime minister for the fourth time in July last year – the 14th head of government since 2008.
Two cabinet members resigned on Monday evening “for moral reasons” because they did not want to continue under the circumstances.
Finally, Oli submitted his resignation to calm the situation.
President Ram Chandra Paudel accepted the resignation and initiated the search for a new head of government.
