Bloody protests in Nepal: Young people demand political renewal
Young Nepalese, known as “Gen Z,” are demanding that former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki be appointed as the country's interim prime minister.
The demand came shortly after Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli resigned following two days of bloody unrest.
The protesters believe that a respected judge with a reputation for independence should head a transitional government, rather than another party politician.
The protests erupted after the government banned social media last week in an attempt to silence public criticism.
However, the move backfired and led to massive unrest.
In the streets of the capital Kathmandu, young people's frustration with corruption, lack of jobs, and years of political stagnation turned into open anger.
At least 25 people were killed and another 600 were injured during police operations involving tear gas and rubber bullets.
The army then took control of the streets, imposed a curfew, and secured the parliament, which had been set on fire by demonstrators, with armored vehicles.
Other government buildings, including the prime minister's private residence, were also destroyed
