UN High Commissioner: Israel must stop massacre in Gaza City
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on Israel to immediately end its ground offensive in Gaza City.
According to him, there is growing evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
“Stop the massacre” – this is how he summarized his appeal to the Israeli leadership, referring to the suffering of the civilian population, including children and people with disabilities.
At the same time, he emphasized the need for peace on both sides of the conflict, which he said was being ignored by Israel's current actions.
A UN commission of inquiry has since concluded that genocide has taken place in Gaza, for which even the highest state representatives, such as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are responsible. Israel rejected this assessment as scandalous.
Türk avoided using the direct term “genocide,” but acknowledged that evidence for a judicial assessment in this category was mounting.
Tensions in the international community are mounting.
