Roskosmos promises satellite-based internet system similar to Starlink

Russia will soon launch its own satellite-based internet system, similar to the Starlink service, according to Dimitry Bakanov, head of the Russian space agency Roskosmos.

The Russian system will be based on satellites in low Earth orbit, similar to SpaceX's Starlink, which primarily provides internet access in remote regions and conflict zones.

Bakanov confirmed that several satellites are already in orbit and a model has been tested.

The Russian state-owned company Bureau 1440 is working on building a network of satellites to provide global broadband connectivity. The plan is to launch more than 900 satellites by 2035, with commercial services set to begin in 2027.

With this move, Russia aims to counter the dominant position of Starlink, which also plays an important role in the Ukraine conflict, as it is used there to ensure communication on the battlefield.
