Orbán remains firm: Hungary blocks tougher EU sanctions against Russian energy
Hungary continues to reject an accelerated phase-out of Russian fossil fuels beyond the existing plans.
This was confirmed on Thursday in Brussels by Hungarian Environment Minister Anikó Raisz.
"Our position is well known. We are one of the few landlocked countries in the region, and our policy has always been primarily determined by energy security," Raisz said when asked whether Budapest would support a faster move away from Russian raw materials or further sanctions against the Russian oil and gas sector.
The minister emphasized that the country has significant tasks to tackle in the energy transition, but warned against unrealistic expectations.
“We know that we face major challenges, but we must not delude ourselves,” she added.
The statement is in line with the Hungarian government's long-standing policy of repeatedly blocking tougher EU sanctions against Russia, emphasizing national interests and the need for stable energy supplies.
