British police arrest three people on suspicion of spying for Russia
On Thursday, British police arrested three people suspected of assisting a foreign intelligence organization.
According to investigators, the case is linked to Russia and falls under the National Security Act passed two years ago, which expanded powers against foreign threats.
Two men aged 41 and 46 and a 35-year-old woman were arrested in Essex.
Dominic Murphy, head of the counterterrorism unit, pointed out that so-called “proxy” agents—intermediaries working on behalf of foreign services—are increasingly being used.
London has repeatedly accused Moscow of covert operations or sabotage, while the Kremlin traditionally denies any wrongdoing.
The case is one of a series of revelations – from the Bulgarian spy cell convicted in March to the July trial of attackers on Ukrainian companies in London, which British authorities say was orchestrated by the Wagner Group.
Murphy emphasized that the new arrests are not directly related to these cases, but confirm the ongoing risk of Russian influence on British security.
