According to airport operators, there was a failure of the automated systems, which forced the check-in and boarding of passengers to be carried out manually.
“This problem has a major impact on the flight schedule and will unfortunately cause delays and flight cancellations,” Brussels Airport said in a statement on its website.
It added that the service provider was working intensively to resolve the disruption.
Heathrow confirmed delays due to a “technical problem” at an external provider. Berlin Airport pointed out on its website that there would be longer waiting times at check-in and stated that it was working on a quick solution.
Operators urged passengers with flights scheduled for Saturday to check their travel plans with their airlines before arriving at the airport.
According to a spokeswoman, Frankfurt Airport was not affected by the incident.
