UN renews sanctions against Iran for violating nuclear agreement
On Saturday, the United Nations once again imposed an arms embargo and further sanctions on Iran after the United Kingdom, France, and Germany requested this in the Security Council. The reason for this is allegations that Tehran has violated the 2015 nuclear agreement, which was intended to prevent the development of nuclear weapons. Iran insists that it is not seeking to manufacture them.
The resumption of sanctions comes just months after the United States and Israel bombed Iranian nuclear facilities. The sanctions include a ban on imports of materials that can be used to enrich and process uranium or to develop ballistic missiles, travel restrictions for dozens of officials, and the freezing of assets of several Iranian institutions.
Tehran responded by recalling its ambassadors from London, Paris, and Berlin for consultations and warned of a harsh response. At the same time, however, the country confirmed that it did not intend to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The United States and European powers emphasize that diplomacy remains open and call on Iran to return to compliance with its obligations.
