Tehran calls on the UN to prevent the resumption of sanctions against Iran

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to prevent the resumption of mechanisms to enforce UN sanctions against Tehran.

In a letter posted on social media platform X, Araghchi stated, “We urge you to prevent any attempt to resume the sanctions mechanisms, including the sanctions committee and the panel of experts.” He emphasized that Iran would not recognize any attempts to extend, resume, or enforce UN sanctions.

This appeal came after the United Kingdom, France, and Germany activated the so-called “snapback” mechanism in August, which reinstates the 2015 UN sanctions against Iran on suspicion of violations of its nuclear commitments.

Russia and China's attempt to postpone the sanctions failed in the UN Security Council. The sanctions are set to come back into force at the end of September 2025. However, Iran considers such measures illegal and refuses to cooperate.
